Financial Support for Students due to the Covid-19 pandemic

Who is eligible to apply?
The funds are open to all Undergraduate and Postgraduate, both taught and research, Home, EU and International students who are fully enrolled on a degree programme at QMUL in 2020/21. Applications will only be considered upon submission of a completed application with all relevant documentation, the sections below will detail what information you need to provide, and the documentation you must submit along with the application.
What can I apply for assistance with?
Covid-19 Bursaries - this fund is now closed
The bursaries are to support:
- Care Leavers or Estranged students aged under 25
- Students who are parents with children living with them
Covid-19 Financial Assistance Awards - this fund is now closed
These awards are for any student, and are based on financial need
- If you have lost your job; you are unable to work due to Covid-19; you are unable to find part-time work due to the current circumstances; your hours of employment have been reduced
- Help with accommodation or living costs, such as private rent where students are unable to receive a rent rebate
- Support towards a laptop if you need to purchase one to support remote learning
- Support towards any additional peripheral IT costs; such as internet to support remote learning

These awards are based on your circumstances.
- Care Leavers or Estranged students aged under 25 who are in their final year of study - £1000
- Care Leavers or Estranged students aged under 25 who are not in their final year of study - £500
- Students who are parents with children living with them - £1000

How do I apply?
- Log in to your MySIS portal and go to the Scholarships and Bursaries page (click + if not visible)
- Click on ‘Apply for Scholarship or Bursary’
- Select ‘Financial Assistance Fund’ from the funding typedropdown and complete the following application screens
- Personal details - you do not need to upload proof of tenancy
- Course details - check your course details are correct
- Funding - tell us about your tuition fees - this will not impact your eligibility for an award, but must be completed - you do not need to upload proof of funding
- Dependants - complete the boxes, and if you have dependants living with you, please upload the evidence of this, it may be a birth certificate; a childcare grant from Student Finance or proof of child benefit
- Disability/Special Medical needs - check these details are correct
- Income - you do not need to fill out this page or provide any evidence
- Expenditure - you do not need to fill out this page or provide any evidence
- Accounts - please enter the details of only the bank account you wish us to pay you into - you do not need to provide any bank statements; you can enter £0 in the balance & overdraft boxes and you can enter 'No' in the questions about purchases over £100
- Personal statement - please use this section to tell us which of the criteria above you are applying under
- Declarations - please select the status that applies to you and review the consent information
- Documents check - here is where you can upload any documents to support your application, for Care Leavers and estrange students, this is a letter from Student Finance confirming that you have been assessed as such; for parent students, please include birth certificate(s) and your child benefit notification.
- Select your bank account for payment
- Make sure you click the ‘Submit’ button on the final screen

These awards are based on your financial need and the maximum you can apply for is £750. You can apply for:
- Up to £750 if you have lost your job, or are unable to work due to Covid or unable to find part-time work due to the current circumstances or your employment hours have been reduced.
- Up to £750 to help with accommodation or living costs where you are unable to receive a rent rebate
- Up to £500 towards the cost of a laptop if you need to purchase one to support remote learning
- Up to £250 towards any additional peripheral costs including internet to support remote learning
Your application will be assessed based on your current financial need and taking into account the funds that you have available to you.

- Accounts - please enter the details of all of your the bank accounts - you must provide us with 1 full months bank statement for each account and tell us about all transactions, in or out, over £100

I have already applied for the Financial Assistance Fund in 2020/21, can I now apply for this fund?
Yes, but before you can you will need to email bursaries@qmul.ac.uk with your student ID number to request that we re-open your application. We will confirm to you once it has been done.
Can I apply for more than one category at a time?
Yes, please complete the instructions for each of the categories you want to apply under, including all the supporting evidence, in the same application. However the maximum Covid-19 Financial Assistance Award you can recieve it £750.
You can apply for both the Covid-19 Bursary and the Covid-19 Financial Assistance Award on the same application, if you meet the eligibility criteria, please ensure you follow the instructions for both form the dropdowns above. The Covid-19 Bursary will be paid in addition to any Covid-19 Financial Assistance Award you may be eligible.
Can I also apply for support from the Financial Assistance Fund?
Yes, when you complete the application please complete all sections and provide the required documentation, as per the guidance on the Financial Assistance Fund webpage.
How quickly will my application be processed?
Due to the unprecedented volume of applications we are currently receiving, we will aim to process all completed application within 6 weeks of submission.
Will this affect my bursary or scholarship eligibility?
No, this fund is in addition to any bursary or scholarship you may also be eligible for.
Will this affect my benefits eligibility?
Because this is paid to you for course related costs, it will not be counted as income. If you need a letter confirming this please email bursaries@qmul.ac.uk with your Student ID to request one.
I'm studying an MBBS in Malta, can I apply?
No, the funding stream is different for your course, if you have exceptional or unforeseen costs and are in financial need you can contact Angela Rowlands at the Academic and Pastoral Support Office by email a.rowlands@qmul.ac.uk
